It’s this desire to please that is best demonstrated in the sport of agility where dogs are guided through a dog obstacle course such as jumps and weave poles in a particular order within an allotted timeframe.
Dogs inherently want to please and agility training allows them to connect with their handlers at deeper level. Once a well-trained dog completes an obstacle, his/her head will turn to see where her owner is directing them next. Adoption Story: Buttercup was seen roaming and scavenging in trash cans around the city for about a week—dodging traffic and humans who tried to catch her. Someone told my husband about her, so he set off to find her. Once he caught up with her, it was love at first sight. Of course, we had her scanned and we made posters and all the rest, but when no one claimed her... we decided to keep her with us (despite already having 10 dogs at the time!) We have a lot of land next to Mark Twain National Forest in Southwest Missouri, and since we are ex-zookeepers who do a lot of wildlife rehab as well as rescuing, it seemed natural to bring her into the fold. There are often patterns in the dogs we choose
Picture a lean, healthy dog that reminds you of a Golden Retriever but has a black coat. It is full of vigor and bounciness with very shiny fur. Add one or more random white splotches on the chest, feet or tip of the tail. Imagine that this dog is playful, athletic and that it has warm amber eyes. That picture in your head is a dog I’m sure to be drawn to. What can I say? I don’t know why this type is so appealing to me, but again and again dogs like this pull me in, even though I love all sorts of dogs. It’s not unusual for people to be drawn to a certain look, type of behavior or a combination of both, in a way that goes beyond just favoring a particular breed.
I used to work with a trainer who couldn’t resist a foxy dog. Pomeranians, American Eskimos, Finnish Spitzes, Keeshounds and Shiba Inus were among her favorites.

While ear infections are pesky conditions that affect many species, dogs are especially at risk for ear infections because of the shape of their ear canals.
Dr. Lori Teller, a clinical associate professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, says that diagnosis and treatment should always be handled by a veterinarian, but dog owners should still be informed on the nature of this condition to keep their furry friend in tip-top shape. “There are multiple causes of ear infections (otitis externa), including allergies (most common), ear mites, a foreign body (this can include polyps or neoplasia), excess hair in the ear canal, anatomic changes in the ear canal, excess moisture in the ear canal, injury, immune-mediated diseases, endocrine disease, and excessive cleaning,” Teller said.

Dear Bark: We live out in the woods, and sadly, people often dump their animals on our lonely road. Recently, a beautiful young Husky appeared and seems to have adopted us. We named him Buck, and we feed him, give him lots of encouraging vocals and so on. At first, he would not come closer to us than about 30 feet, but now, after we’ve worked with him, he will come to within about 10 feet. On occasion, when our three dogs are gathered around us, he’ll join them and get close; once, he even licked my hand! In 2017, Marlin Jackson boarded a cross-country flight. When he got to his row, another passenger was already in the middle seat with an emotional support dog in his lap.
According to Mr. Jackson’s attorney, “The approximately 50-pound dog growled at Mr. Jackson soon after he took his seat…and continued as Mr. Jackson attempted to buckle his seatbelt. The growling increased and the dog lunged for Mr. Jackson’s face…who could not escape due to his position against the plane’s window.” Facial wounds requiring 28 stitches were the result.

My favorite police officer on television is smart, empathetic, attentive and brave. He’s also incredibly handsome. I’m talking about Rex, the fictional police canine played by the German shepherd Diesel vom Burgimwald who co-stars on CITY TV’s hit show Hudson & Rex. It’s not prestige TV, but it is a well-made, diverse, thoughtful and unapologetically Canadian police procedural with an impressive four-legged officer.

If your dog exhibits behavior problems, she is in good company. A recent study of over 13,000 pet dogs in Finland found that nearly three-quarters of dogs have a behavioral issue. The study almost certainly underrepresents the percentage of dogs with a behavior problem because this study focused on just seven of them: noise sensitivity, fearfulness, compulsion, fear of surfaces or heights, inattention/impulsivity, separation related behavior and aggression. It did not investigate destructive chewing, jumping up, digging, counter surfing and many other behaviors that are common and considered problematic to the people in their lives. Additionally, because the data came from guardian surveys, assessing its reliability is challenging.

It was late January when the Mesa Fire Department in Arizona rescued two Shar Pei puppies from a car that crashed and caught fire. According to news reports, the crash happened at gas station just before midnight on January 29. After losing control and slamming into one of the pumps, the driver fled, leaving the two pups alone in the burning vehicle.
Mesa Fire Department was able to rescue the two puppies and put out the fire. After the rescue, Mesa Police seized the two dogs who were transferred to an overnight clinic before being sent to the Arizona Humane Society's Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital™ for further evaluation.
AHS’ Emergency Animal Medical Technicians™ and Cruelty Investigators performed more than 7,700 cruelty investigations last year. Almost 12,000 animals a year receive medical care and treatment in AHS’ Trauma Hospital.
