A new study from the University of Copenhagen reports that the prevalence of overweight dogs is markedly larger among overweight owners than among normal weight owners. Part of the explanation lies in whether treats are used as training tools or snacks. It is the first major study on canine obesity in Denmark.

Among obese owners, 35% of dogs in the study were overweight whereas only 14% of dogs belonging to slim/normal weight owners were overweight.

In addition, the study finds that 29% of the castrated male dogs in the study were heavy/obese versus only 10% of the reproductively intact males.

The researchers studied 268 adult dogs recruited at animal clinics around Zealand and the capital region of Denmark. Of the pets recruited, 20% were either heavy or obese. All the dogs were at least two years old, and not suffering from chronic ailments.

Dog lovers are always looking for ways to incorporate more dog-time into their lives, why not on vacation too? Who wouldn’t want to take a quick pit stop to roam with a pack of dogs or snuggle with a soft and friendly puppy at an animal rescue! Even in the best pet rescue facilities, shelter life can be stressful to dogs, so you’ll both benefit from the shared love.

But what happens when you’ve locked eyes with the dog of your dreams when you’re on vacation? It might seem daunting but if you can’t imagine life without your new friend, you can bring them back home with you to the United States. Adopting a dog from another country is a worthwhile experience, but the process can also be frustrating if you aren’t taking all the necessary precautions.

We’ve outlined a complete guide on how to bring your new best friend into the United States.

Getting the news your dog or cat is sick or injured is a nightmare for pet parents — one that is followed by difficult questions, gut-wrenching decisions and, oftentimes, a large bill.

In 2017, the American Pet Produce Association estimated that U.S. pet owners spent $70 billion on their pets. More than $17 billion of that was on veterinary care.

Just like in human medical care, new treatments are continuously being discovered for Fido and Fifi. At first glance, this seems like a good thing — and oftentimes it is.

But, when it comes to treatments for your sick pet, more isn’t always better, said Jessica Pierce, bioethicist and author of “Run Spot Run” and “The Last Walk.”

“It’s really hard to say, ‘We don’t want these treatments,’” Pierce said. “Because it sounds like you’re refusing care or refusing the best when that’s actually not the case at all.”

When you adopt a dog, you adopt a family member. You carefully consider what would make him or her feel happy and loved, then execute the fun pet supply shopping trip. Many don’t consider grooming right off the bat, and that’s okay, for a little while. No matter what breed or mix they are, grooming is a fundamental part of the basic care of your furry family members. Typically, every 6-8 weeks you should be making a visit to your local groomer who pours their heart and soul into their work. You find a groomer you can trust and be completely transparent with about the needs of your dog. You think to yourself, “great, I’ve got this under control!” Well, not entirely. There are a few things that your pooch needs between their spa sessions. After all, when you get your hair done, you do basic daily upkeep for yourself don’t you? Dogs are not much different.

A five-year-old Labrador Retriever named Quinn is about to become the first canine member of Run 169 Towns Society (Run 169) to run a race in all 169 towns in the state of Connecticut. The goal of each member of Run 169 is complete a timed race in all 169 towns in the state. In the last three years, Quinn has raced in 168 towns, and she will run a race on October 20, 2019 in her 169th town. As luck would have it, the Michael E Walsh Memorial 5K that she is scheduled to run that day raises money for a rescue charity called the Protector of Animals.

Dog’s name and age: Allie, 6 years

Nicknames: Tank, Al, Goober

Adoption Story: I first met Allie when she was placed with me as a foster dog. My students were asking about her, so I brought her to classes with me one day and it was surprisingly easy. I fostered her for almost 6 months and seeing her at class was what helped me decide on being a foster failure. That was 5 years ago.

Allie’s Favorites: After kayaking and hiking, Allie’s favorite activity is snuggling up to my students and listening to them tell her how much they miss their pets while they are at college.

Tricks: The one that impresses people the most is that she will walk up stairs backwards on command.

A Review of Dog Is Love by scientist Clive Wynne, PhD

Clive Wynne’s new book Dog Is Love: Why and How Your Dog Loves You explores what makes dogs special. The book’s main point that “it isn’t their smarts but their hearts that makes dogs exceptional” and Wynne shares his personal journey from skeptic to proponent of this theory. The tale includes in-depth, entertaining explanations of many research studies (including a number of his own) that support the idea that dogs’ extraordinary capacity for love is what makes them unique unto themselves and in our lives. He asserts that 1) love is the cornerstone of our relationship with dogs and 2) that their great capacity for love has implications for how we act towards them and the great responsibility we have to them. It is both an informative read and a call to action.
